Marist Brothers International School Summer School Program 2024

MONDAY 17 JUNE - FRIDAY 12 JULY

The Marist Summer School Program aims to provide students with opportunities to participate in a variety of learning experiences that focus on language development (English and Japanese), extended learning opportunities, academic challenges, and life skills.

Early Years and Lower School students engage in focused morning classes with an emphasis on skills development, inquiry, and critical and creative thinking. Afternoon sessions are dedicated to field trips and physical and creative experiences as much as possible.

MBIS Summer School Program 2024

EARLY YEARS (3 – 6 Year Olds)

Children build a foundation of educationally sound language, social, and intellectual skills in a safe and caring environment. Our Summer School Program provides an excellent opportunity for children entering or continuing in Montessori in August to become well accustomed to school life whilst learning new skills and having fun! Enrollment spaces are limited.

LOWER SCHOOL (GRADES 1 – 5)

The Summer School Program gives children an opportunity to continue to build fundamental, educationally sound language, social and intellectual skills at school in a safe and caring environment. Specialist subject experiences will be scheduled in the afternoon as much as possible and will include Art, Outdoor Local Excursions, Physical activity and games, and Science. The afternoon sessions are designed to be hands-on, challenging, and enjoyable.

Upper School (Grades 6 – 12)

The Summer School Program for Upper School students provides flexible registration options for students and their parents. Students can register for courses scheduled in the morning and afternoon. The list and description of courses can be found below:

Course Description: The purpose of the course is for students to learn about a variety of global issues and ways to combat them through service work inside the local community. Through the course, students will first gain knowledge of geography, history, culture, and social movements of Japan before thinking of ways to solve the global issues. They will then act on a variety of service work outside the school, and will reflect on their experiences in both English and Japanese. By the end of the course, they will also build communication and leadership skills by hosting their own sustainability project inside the school.

This course is designed for students entering Grades 9 – 11. Students will conduct experiments with some based on US Science Olympiad events. Experiments may include chemical titrations, electrical circuit building, bird identification, and identifying geological specimens. Students can also expect to learn how to use Vernier Science probes and sensors as well as LoggerPro software. Students will need their own laptop computer to install the LoggerPro software.

Course Description: Explore the art of digital photography in our four-week summer course, designed for middle and high school students who wish to harness the power of their smartphones (or digital cameras)
to create stunning visual stories. This course covers essential photography skills such as composition, lighting, and editing, alongside creative techniques for color usage, black and white photography, and personal storytelling. Through hands-on tasks and daily presentations, students will refine their ability to

This class consists of two components. The first component will consist of weight training.

During this time, athletes will put into practice a variety of training techniques, learn new lifts, better form for familiar lifts, and practice mind-muscle connection. As a result, athletes have new levels of strength and endurance.

The second component is a seminar where Mr. Deyss will address some of the more common training questions and misconceptions. This will include discussions on but not limited to, training style, diet and nutrition, supplementation, rest and recovery, and mental aspects of training.

Course Description: This course will be an Extended Essay Clinic for students looking for some extra guidance as they continue the work they’ve completed during the school year on their extended essays. If
students have fallen behind in the deadlines set for the research and outline, this is a chance to get some help catching up. If they are ready to begin drafting, this is a dedicated time and place to get that work done with the added bonus of a teacher to help guide them along the way. Mini-lessons on aspects of the essay and general writing instruction will accompany work time as well as one-on-one guidance. Getting a draft completed over the summer is no longer just a recommendation but an expectation, so take advantage of a little extra help to check off a major task from your list.

Course Description: Who doesn’t desire to be better understood or to get what they want? Both of these basic human aspirations can be better fulfilled by strong communication skills. This practical course helps students develop improved interpersonal communication skills across a variety of formats including active listening, body language, verbal communication, public speaking and email communication to name just a few. The course is open to and useful for all Upper School students, but will be particularly helpful for students already in, or thinking about joining MUN as well as students in school leadership positions.
