MBIS Summer School is back!
Join us this summer from June 22 to July 17 for four weeks of engaging learning, creativity, exploration, and fun. Students participate in hands-on learning designed to strengthen skills, encourage inquiry, and build confidence through collaboration and exploration.

Academic Writing

This course is designed to support students working on their Extended Essay (EE) through focused, guided work sessions. Students will have dedicated time to develop their research questions, locate and evaluate sources, organize evidence, and make meaningful progress on drafting. Emphasis will be placed on conducting research ethically and producing work with academic integrity. Work sessions will include brief mini-lessons on topics such as responsible use of sources, citation practices, avoiding plagiarism, and the appropriate use of research tools.
Students will also receive guidance on structuring arguments, refining research questions, and maintaining clear documentation of their research process. The primary goal is to provide a structured environment where students can make steady progress while ensuring their work meets IB expectations for ethical research and independent scholarship.

This class targets students preparing for the N4 and N3 intermediate levels of the JLPT. Knowing Japanese at these levels is essential for second- or third-language learners who wish to enter a university in Japan. By studying for the JLPT, students can improve their grammar, vocabulary, reading, and listening skills, all of which are important for academic study. At the N4 and N3 levels, students develop a stronger understanding of everyday Japanese and begin to handle more complex sentences and expressions.

This course will support DP Group 3 students in developing strong, focused Internal Assessments. Students will be able to work on refining research questions and strengthen their understanding of investigation requirements. Additionally, there will be mini-lessons on writing, including a focus on structure and clarity. Targeted, individual feedback will be provided along with time to work on IAs.
VEX IQ Robotics
VEX IQ Robotics - ¥29,925 per week

This course is for current Grade 6 – 8 students. During the VEX IQ course, students can be a designer, an engineer, and a creative thinker — all while having fun exploring STEM ideas and concepts with VEX IQ! VEX IQ is based on plastic, snap-together pieces specifically designed to build highly functional robots. This system doesn’t require any prior knowledge in robotics.
Students will collaborate on diverse challenges as they explore how different robot mechanisms work and fuel their passion for learning through a blend of coding, game-based engineering, and driving tasks that seamlessly integrate creativity, imagination, and STEM education. The course will be led by Jay Inman and student members of the Upper School Bulldog Robotics Team.
VEX V5 Robotics
VEX V5 Robotics - ¥29,925 per week

This course is for current Grade 8–11 students using the VEX V5 Robotics system. During the VEX V5 Robotics course, students can be a designer, engineer, programmer, and driver while exploring advanced STEM ideas through hands-on robotics. VEX V5 uses strong metal parts, motors, sensors, and controllers that allow students to build powerful and complex robots. This system is used in many middle school and high school robotics competitions around the world.
Students will work in teams to design, build, and program robots to complete a variety of challenges. Students will learn how robot mechanisms work, practice coding and driving skills, and solve engineering problems together. Through robot design, coding, and game-based challenges, students develop creativity, teamwork, and confidence while experiencing real engineering in action. The students will be led by Jay Inman and student members of the Upper School Bulldog Robotics Team.

The Science Data Collection course is designed to support current Grade 11 students in completing a collection of experimental data for their Physics, ESS, Chemistry or Biology IB Assessment(s). The course also provides opportunities for students to receive teacher feedback on their experiment progress. Current Grade 11 students only. Students may sign up for one week or two weeks.

IBDP Students are required to analyse their data to a sophisticated level to produce well-supported conclusions and a critical evaluation of their investigation. This analysis frequently involves rigorous mathematical processing, including graph construction, complex calculations, uncertainty treatment and interpretation, and, where appropriate, statistical testing. This one-week course is designed to support students in reinforcing and extending their data analysis skills while completing the analysis of their own investigation data.

This course offers an engaging and hands-on experience through the use of interactive games. Centered on cooperative board games, students will enjoy meaningful play while building important STEM skills such as teamwork, critical thinking, and strategic planning. Each activity is designed to encourage collaboration, problem-solving, and thoughtful decision-making. Along the way, participants will experience the excitement of friendly competition in a supportive environment that promotes both learning and fun.
Social Badminton

Students will learn the fundamentals of badminton, from footwork to overhead shots to net play. Game time will allow students to test their skills against other players. If you enjoy playing badminton and would like more time to practice and play, this course is for you.
Bodybuilding & Strength Training

This course runs in the mornings and consists of two components, in which athletes will be able to tap into over thirty years of bodybuilding experience and knowledge. The first component consists of weight training under the guidance of the instructor. During this time, athletes will put into practice a variety of training techniques, learn better form for familiar lifts, practice mind-muscle connection, and as a result, reach new levels of strength and endurance.
The second component is a seminar where the instructor will address some of the more common training questions and misconceptions. This will include discussions on, but not limited to, training style, diet and nutrition, supplementation, rest and recovery, and mental aspects of training. The course is open to both male and female students.

This hands-on cooking course introduces students in Grades 6–12 to essential kitchen skills while exploring flavors from around the world. Cooking is an important life skill that builds independence, creativity, and confidence. Throughout the course, students will learn how to prepare simple dishes, measure ingredients, follow recipes, and practice safe kitchen habits while working collaboratively with classmates.
Each week will focus on a different cuisine, allowing students to experience a variety of ingredients, cooking techniques, and cultural traditions. During the week, students will cook a different dish each day based on that week’s theme. In Week 1, students will explore Thai cuisine and learn about balancing sweet, salty, sour, and spicy flavors. Week 2 will focus on Mexican cuisine, where students will prepare classic dishes while learning about traditional ingredients and cooking methods. In Week 3, students will cook Korean-inspired dishes and explore the bold flavors and fermented ingredients commonly used in Korean food. Week 4 will focus on desserts, where students will learn basic baking techniques and create a variety of sweet treats.
Students will cook together each morning and enjoy eating the dishes they prepared together at lunch. At the end of each week, students will also receive a digital recipe ebook featuring all of the dishes made during that week so they can recreate them at home. This course encourages teamwork, cultural appreciation, and practical cooking skills students can use for life.
Service Learning

The Service Learning course offers students in Grades 6–10 the opportunity to explore important global issues while developing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to contribute positively to their communities. Throughout the course, students will examine pressing global challenges and consider their impact on both local and international communities.
By learning about the geography, history, and culture of Japan as well as the local community, students will deepen their cultural awareness and appreciation while engaging in meaningful intercultural learning. The course also focuses on the development of practical skills through research, collaboration, and hands-on activities, encouraging students to think critically and take initiative when addressing global issues.
In addition, students will learn how to follow the IB service learning process, including the stages of investigation, preparation, action, reflection, and demonstration. This framework will help them participate more effectively in service projects and prepare them for future experiences in MYP Service Learning and the IB Diploma Programme CAS.
The course also introduces the concept of sustainable living through learning about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and exploring ways individuals and communities can contribute to a more sustainable future both locally and globally. Through bilingual learning experiences, students will also strengthen their communication skills while becoming thoughtful and responsible global citizens.
