How Students Learn

Inquiry in Action

Learning in the PYP is driven by questions. Students explore meaningful topics, investigate ideas, and make real-world connections through hands-on experiences.

Big Ideas, Not Just Subjects

Students learn through six transdisciplinary themes that encourage deeper understanding:

  1. Who We Are
  2. Where We Are in Place and Time
  3. How We Express Ourselves
  4. How the World Works
  5. How We Organize Ourselves
  6. Sharing the Planet

Building Skills for Life

Students develop essential skills such as:

  • Thinking and problem-solving
  • Communication and collaboration
  • Research and self-management

Learning Journey

Students explore each unit of inquiry over several weeks, allowing time for deep thinking and meaningful exploration.

  • Grades 1 – 5: Units typically run for 4 – 8 weeks
  • Early Years: Longer, flexible units designed around key developmental themes
What Makes The PYP Special?

Student Voice & Choice

Students take an active role in their learning—asking questions, making decisions, and exploring topics that matter to them.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Collaboration, discussion, and real-world connections are at the heart of every unit.

A Focus on the Whole Child

We support each child’s academic, social, emotional, and physical development in a balanced way.

Taking Meaningful Action

Students are encouraged to apply their learning to make a positive difference in their community and the world.

Assessments

Assessment

Assessment in the PYP looks beyond tests.

Teachers use a variety of approaches to understand each child’s growth, including:

  • Observations and discussions
  • Student reflections and self-assessment
  • Projects and real-world tasks

This holistic approach ensures that every child’s progress—academic, social, and emotional—is recognized and supported.

PYP Exhibition (Grade 5)

The PYP Exhibition is a highlight of the final year.

Students work collaboratively to investigate real-world issues, apply their learning, and present their ideas to the community.

It is a powerful opportunity for students to:

  • Demonstrate their understanding
  • Develop independence and teamwork
  • Take action on issues they care about
