The following information is derived from interviews with MBIS graduates.

Name: Naomi Smith

Nationality: Australian

Year graduated from MBIS: 2006

Which college/university are you currently studying at?: The University of Sydney, Australia.

What course are you currently studying?: Bachelor of Global Studies.

What is life like at college/university?: It’s wonderful to be in a campus of people of different personalities, nationalities, and interests.

Did you encounter any difficulties when you first started studying at college/university?: People are a lot more outspoken in classes, so I had to learn to be friendly and confident in stating my views. Essay writing takes a lot of discipline, so I had to learn to balance my time.

What do you hope to do once you graduate?: Work for the Australian government in international relations, work in an international aid organization, for a Japan-related company, or for a newspaper.

What two pieces of advice would you give to seniors currently at MBIS?: 1. Enjoy the variety of classes while you can. University is a lot more specialized. Also, get involved with clubs so that you can learn organizational skills. 2. Don’t worry about which courses you are doing, it’s not so hard to switch. If you’re unsure, pick a flexible university and course. That gives you options. Email students at the university you’re in. Insider knowledge is great!

Name: Ji Su Lee

Nationality: South Korean

Year graduated from MBIS: 2007

Which college/university are you currently studying at?: Waseda University, SILS (School of International Liberal Studies)

What course are you currently studying?: Introduction to Mathematical Statistics, Introduction to Journalism.

What is life like at college/university?: SILS is a more diverse version on MBIS. I like it very much (but some Japanese professors can’t teach well in English).

Did you encounter any difficulties when you first started studying at college/university?: The first few days I arrived in Tokyo I was homesick (before the school started), but with school I became fine. I relied on my religious affiliation – God. I had already made new friends through Facebook so it wasn’t really hard.

What do you hope to do once you graduate?: Either go to graduate school, get a full-time internship, or get a job.

What two pieces of advice would you give to seniors currently at MBIS?: 1. Try to be involved in various school activities – sports, MUN, Student Council, etc. 2. Don’t prepare for college in your senior year. Plan and prepare for it ahead. Seniors, enjoy your high school life – make lots of good memories.
